1696年，勃兰登堡选帝侯腓特烈三世创立勃兰登堡艺术学院。它最初不只是传授技艺的学校，也是成员相聚、讨论并分享思想的学术机构。此后，学院以不同名称为普鲁士政府承担艺术委员会和学术团体的角色，成为欧洲历史最久的同类学院之一。它还不断创办附属学校：1799年成立的建筑学院，后来成为一条重要的教育支脉。"The academy's predecessor organization was founded in 1696 by Elector Frederick III of Brandenburg as the Brandenburg Academy of Arts, an academic institution in which members could meet and discuss and share ideas."
它的道路也经历了分离、占用与重建。1931年，学术部分完全分离，发展为今天的柏林艺术大学；1938年，学院建筑被阿尔伯特·施佩尔接管，学院暂迁至王储宫，最终于1945年停止运作。战后，东西柏林各自建立了继承机构，直到1993年10月1日重新合并，形成今天的学院，并在巴黎广场原址的新建筑中安顿下来。如今，它既推动艺术，也为德国各州提供咨询和支持，保留着美术、建筑、音乐、文学、视觉艺术与电影等领域的公共文化使命。"The two were merged on 1 October 1993 into the present-day academy, which took its seat in a new building at the former location on Pariser Platz."
