The story of the National Gallery of the Faroe Islands began with an art space that gradually grew into a museum. Listaskáli had existed since 1970; the museum itself was established in 1989, and a separate gallery for historic arts followed in 1993. The building, with an area of 1,600 m2, stands at the northern end of the Park of Tórshavn, near the Nordic House in the Faroe Islands. Designed by J.P. Gregoriussen, it also hosts the Faroe Islands’ Artists’ Association, Listafelag Føroya. In this way, a place for collecting and viewing art is also connected to the community of artists.
Its importance can be felt in the dialogue between permanence and change. The gallery holds a permanent collection while presenting shifting exhibitions of old and new Faroese art. Three to four temporary exhibitions are held every year, sometimes featuring artists from other countries. The Olavsoka Exhibition, normally held each summer, is the Faroe Islands Art Society’s annual exhibition of Faroese art. In 2010, it displayed 103 artworks by 38 Faroese artists, five of whom exhibited at the Faroe Islands Art Museum for the first time. That first appearance gives a precise, human measure of how the gallery makes room for new voices.
