里伯美术馆于1891年落成，它坐落的别墅原是工厂主巴尔塔扎尔·吉奥茨（1827–1891）的私人宅邸。这座宅子由建筑师兼皇家测量师劳里茨·阿尔伯特·温斯特鲁普（1815–1889）绘图，建于1860–1864年间。一栋私宅转为面向公众的美术馆，这个转折本身便是它诞生故事的核心。
2009–2010年间，美术馆的主楼、八角凉亭连同花园与前院一起被修复并部分现代化，新装修的美术馆于2010年11月26日重新揭幕。它的收藏呈现约1750年至1940年丹麦绘画艺术的主线，延斯·尤尔、C. W. 埃克斯贝格、克里斯滕·克布克、克里斯蒂安·扎尔特曼、L. A. 林、P. S. 克罗耶、安娜·安切尔、迈克尔·安切尔、威廉·沙夫、克里斯蒂娜·道高都在其列——从私宅到公共收藏，这条线索让一座小城美术馆承载了丹麦绘画的一段长时段记忆。
