Villa Verdi
正如原文所说:“most of Verdi's life was lived at the Villa.”
原文称:“which was occupied by the composer and his wife.”
In 1844, Verdi bought the farmland at Sant'Agata, and in 1848 he ordered a villa to be built on it. The work began as extensions to an existing farmhouse, but the project expanded until the original house was replaced. The completed estate had two wings with terraces, greenhouses, a chapel, and garages for coaches. Verdi and Giuseppina Strepponi enlarged the garden and planted many trees, including some of exotic origin, a few of which are still alive. They moved into the Villa in 1851. Apart from journeys to European cities and a few winter stays elsewhere, Verdi spent most of his life there. The source captures the scale of that connection in the words: “most of Verdi's life was lived at the Villa.”
After Strepponi's death in 1897, Verdi spent less time at the estate, though he continued to oversee it personally and ran a profitable farming business. Today, the Villa belongs to four siblings of the Carrara-Verdi family, descendants of Verdi's younger cousin Maria Filomena Verdi, whom Verdi and his wife brought up as a daughter. Parts of the house remain their year-round home, while the south wing is partly used as a museum. Visitors can see five ground-floor rooms occupied by the composer and his wife: Strepponi's bedroom, Verdi's bedroom and study, the dressing room with the Fritz piano, and the Grand Hotel et de Milan room. The last contains furniture from Room 157, where Verdi died, along with his death shirt and deathmask. As the source states, the rooms “were occupied by the composer and his wife.”
